Abstract

This is an action research on the use of DVD-SLL strategy in improving
freshmen listening comprehension at English department of FKIP Lancang Kuning
University Pekanbaru. Based on the preliminary study, the researcher found 48,60 %
students who had good listening comprehension or about 51,40 % students had low
listening comprehension. So that, the researcher conducted classroom action
research by using DVD-SLL strategy to improve students’ listening comprehension.
The purpose of the action research is to explain whether DVD-SLL strategy
improves students’ listening comprehension and what factors influence it.
This research was conducted in listening comprehension of freshmen
students class A English department of FKIP Lancang Kuning University
Pekanbaru. In this research, thirty one students were taught listening comprehension
subject by using DVD-SLL strategy in three cycles for six weeks (six meetings).
During the process there were observed and tested by using observation checklist,
field notes, and listening comprehension test taken from TOEFL CBT form,
Barron’s 11th edition.
The result of this research shows that the students’ listening comprehension
increased in each cycle. In the first cycle, the percentage of students’ listening
comprehensions was 49,68%.. In the second cycle, the increasing of students’
listening comprehension was 53,76 %.. But, the result was not satisfactory yet, so
the research continued to the cycle three. The result of the students’ listening
comprehension was 67,92%. It means that there is an increasing of students’
listening comprehension about 18,24 % from cycle one to cycle three.
In conclusion, the use of DVD-SLL strategy could increase the students’
listening comprehension, so that, it is needed for the English lecturer or teacher to
spread the strategy to other English lecturer or teachers as one of the strategies that
can improve students’ listening comprehension
