Abstract
Background research on deaf issues raised in general, that is difficult to understand the content of a discourse. This problem also occurs in deaf students in SLB Wacana Asih Padang. Based on this observation, the average student is able to read the cues and lipsync, but students will be confused and sometimes misinterpret the meaning or sentence that is being asked again about the discourse. Therefore, the author seeks to help students overcome this problem by using the method of reading the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review).The research objective was to determine whether the SQ3R method can improve students' ability to understand the content of a discourse. This study is a kind of quasi-experimental studies (Quasy Experiment-Research). The study design used in this study is the design of a single group (one group pretest posttest design).
Subjects were students with hearing impairment class B / IX SLB Wacana Asih Padang. In this study, students were asked to read using the SQ3R method. With this method, students not only read but also asked to observe, retelling, and review every word that is less understood. Then, students will be given about the discourse. After that, students responses will be observed as a result of the methods applied. Based on the results of the study, obtained data that the ability of students to understand the content of a discourse increases. This is evidenced by the
value of students responses, when compared between before and after using the SQ3R method, so it can be concluded that the SQ3R method can improve the ability of deaf students' class B / IX SLB Wacana Asih Padang in understanding the content of a discourse. It is recommended that this method is used to continue.
