Abstract

This article analyzes about the novel Out of My Mind (2010) by Sharon M. Draper. The problem of this analysis is how far the novel exposes about the issue of maximizing the competence. The purpose of the analysis is to find out how the main character maximize her competence to reach the equality to normal people. This analysis involves the the fictional devices such as character, plot (conflict), and setting to reveal the issue of maximizing the competence. This analysis deals with the psychoanalysis theory by Freud and the concept of self-awareness by Crisp-Turner. The result of this analysis shows that the main character are able to maximize her competence by two ways: participating in competition and social life.
