Abstract

Nowadays, the development of dance is not only limited to aesthetic and artistic value, however, dancing has been further progressing along with the change of socio-culture and the fast growing economy. This progress is accompanied by the development of science and technology which also contributes to the change of dancing theory and knowledge. Recently, in the study of choreography in academic settings the pattern of arrangement for dance choreography is not only limited to the conventional method which is only focused on the organization of movements, but it also functions as the media of its, artists' critique and expression. Dancing at this moment does not only belong to a certain community (tradition) but it is also an individual belonging which is well known as contemporary dance. There is a tendency in Indonesia these days that although the dances use the contemporary pattern of arrangement, they are not separated from the idiom or the spirit of the tradition owned by the choreography. This phenomenon has become a new trend in studying choreograpy in the context of the creation of Indonesian contemporary dance developed by arts academians.
