Abstract

There are three ultimate backgrounds of this research. First, literature is
regarded as a reflection of a society that is revealed in the literary work. In this
case, short stories written in Kompas in year 2000-2009 are able to reveal the
gender phenomenon of people's lives. Second, from the previous research it is
found that there is a positive dynamics in terms of changes in the author's view of
gender, whether similar phenomenon occur and are found in short stories
published in Kompas 2000-2009. Third, reformation is seen as an opportunity to
organize the life of the Indonesian people, including life’s woman toward better
after the escape from the confines of the New Order. Thus, the question is
centered on whether the better reformation of women lives is reflected in short
stories published in Kompas 2000-2009. This study is aimed at describing and
explaining the phenomenon of gender on the selected short stories in Kompas
2000-2009.
This study is conducted through a qualitative approach by using content
analysis techniques. Object of this study is the short stories contained in the tenbook
collection of Kompas daily published from 2000 till 2009. The data of the
research is in the form of words and sentences that contain the phenomenon of
gender and analyzed using structural theory, feminism, and sociology literature.
The research instrument is the researcher himself, assisted by a job analysis tables
based on sub-focus research.
The findings of this study reveal that the views of access to education
between women and men, economic resources, and social and political activity,
between men and women possess equal opportunities to get education, acting in
the economic sector, and the role of social and political sectors. In decisionmaking,
men and their families are still dominated. Furthermore, the labor
division between husband and wife in educated family is equal, but in uneducated
family wives tend to act dominantly. From marital disharmony aspect, women are
victims of domestic violence. From the research findings, it is recommended that
the short story in Kompas can be used as learning materials of analysis fiction for
junior and senior high school. In addition, it is suggested that gender equality is
necessary to be taught to children from an early age in the family through reading
literature.
