Abstract

Based on the researcher’s experience during teaching at grade X SMA Plus Binabangsa Pekanbaru, the researcher found that the students’ speaking skill of narrative was low. One of the causes was media. The media that were used by the teacher did not give the result of students’ speaking skill of narrative text. The purpose of the research was to find out whether students who were taught by using animated films hadbetter speaking skill of narrative text than those who were taught by picture story. This research was quasi experimental research; nonequivalent control group design. The treatments were only done in experimental class. The research was conducted at gradeX SMA Plus Binabangsa Pekanbaru in 2012/2013 academic year. It consists ofX.1 and X.2. X.1 was control class taught by picture story while X.2 was experimental class taught by animated films. To collect the data, the researcher used speaking test. The data were analyzed by using independent t-test. The finding showed that the mean score of controlclass was 9.74 and standard deviation was 4.68 while mean score of experimental class was14.5 and standard deviation was 5.46.Moreover,the value of tcalculated was 2.640 with the degree of freedom (30) compared with the level of significance 0.05 (2.042). As the result, the value of tcalculatedwas bigger than t in the table (2.640>2.042.). Thus, null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that animated film enhanced students’ gain score of speaking skill of narrative text than picture story. In conclusion, students who were taught by animated films hadbetterspeaking skill than those who were taught by picture story. ii
