Abstract

Based on the result of the previous observation, it was found that the student’ activities and ability in mathematical communication were not satisfied yed. The students found difficulties in communicating the mathematical ideas in each material they learnt. The learning methods used which were less variaed were assumed as the causes of this problem. This research was aimed at improving the students’ activity and learning achievement in math through STAD cooperative learning model. The formulation of the problem was ”How were the students’ activities and learning achievement in math after being taught by using STAD cooperative learning model in class VIII MTs. Swasta Islamiyah Purbatua?” This was a classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subject of this research was class VIII of MTs Swasta Islamiyah Purbatua consisting of 40 students. The data of this research was gotten through observating sheet, test on the students’ ability in conceptual understanding, test on the students’ ability in mathematical communication, field note and interview guidance. The data gotten then was analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The result of the research showed thet the use of STAD cooperative learning model could improve the students’ activities and their learning achievement as well in Math. The students’ activities in giving respond, answering questions, giving comment, asking question, and giving explanation to the peers in a group were in good category. The student’ activities in taking note, investigating, reading, observingand finding the solution for the problems in the LKS individually were in very good category. Learning achievement of the students in conceptual understanding at the and of the research was 75% and in mathematical communication was 72,5%. From the result of the research, it can be concluded that the use of STAD cooperative learning model could improve the students’ activities and learning achievement in Math in class VIII of MTs. Swasta Islamiyah Purbatua.
