Communicative Competence of English Departement Students in Speaking at Batanghari University Jambi

This thesis is about analyzing of communicative competence of students‟ speaking. Communicative competence is the ability in using language effectively. The purposes of this research were focused on two competences; (1) linguistic competence concerning with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation. (2) strategic competence which deals with interactional, reduction compensatory strategy and, conversational awareness. The theory used in this research is the one proposed by Bachman (1990) combined with the theory of Celce-Murcia & Dornyei (1995), Kim (2007), Wen (1999), and Thompson (2008). The research was a descriptive research. The source of the data was the fourth semester students of Batanghari University Jambi in academic year 2012/2013. It was taken randomly and the percentage was 25% of the fourth semester students. The instruments consisted of test, questionnaire, and interview. The data were analyzed by using percentage for the quantitative data and descriptive analysis for qualitative data. Based on the observation analysis, it was found that the linguistic competence and strategic competence of students‟ speaking were poor. The result could be seen in the observation of the average scores which described that there were 2.30 in linguistic competence and 2.41 in strategic competence. Then based on the result of questionnaire and interview, most of students did not understand the knowledge of the linguistic and strategic competence. It was the fact that they got difficulties in linguistic and strategic competence.
