Abstract

The purposes of the research are; to find out the third grade of English Department students’ ability in constructing generic structure concerning about thesis statement, argument, and conclusion and developing analytical and hortatory exposition essays by five patterns of example, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, definition, and classification at STKIP PGRI west Sumatera. Research method was descriptive. Research subject was the third grade students of session B of English Department STKIP PGRI West Sumatera that was registered in 2011/2012 academic year that consisted of 30 students. The findings shown that: First, the students’ ability in constructing generic structure of analytical exposition essay was categorized limited. They constructed weak, too broad and non-debatable thesis statement, arguments, reiteration. Second, the students’ ability in developing analytical exposition essay by five essay patterns was also limited. The essay development was not detail, too general, and lack explanation. Third, the students’ ability in constructing generic structure of hortatory exposition essay was also limited. They constructed too general and weak thesis statement, arguments, recommendation. Fourth, the students’ ability in developing hortatory exposition by five essay patterns was limited in which the development was too general and weak. From the findings, it can be concluded that most of students had limited ability in constructing generic structure for both of analytical and hortatory exposition essays. Then, the students’ ability in developing analytical and hortatory exposition essays by five essay patterns were limited.
