Abstract

It would be effective to direct the learners to determine their further education since they were in primary school, such as in Elementary School and Junior High School. The local curriculum for Junior High School had a crucial role to help the students to determine their higher education. The phenomena in the field, however, indicated that the learners were confused to choose further school, and parents exerted more influence upon them. The purpose of this research was to uncover, describe, and analyze the Guidance and Counseling teachers’ efforts to prepare the learners to choose further education. This was a descriptive research which applied quantitative approach. The population of the research was 87 Guidance and Counseling teachers from 37 SMPNs in Kota Padang. By using purposive sampling technique, 30 Guidance and Counseling teachers from 37 SMPNs in Kota Padang were chosen as the sample. The instrument of the research was questionnaire of Likert scale. The data gotten was analyzed by using percentage technique. The result of the research indicated that the Guidance and Counseling teachers’ efforts to prepare the learners to choose further education in general was in adequate category or 56,67%. Specifically, sub variable a) Guidance and Counseling Service program was in adequate category by 43,34%, b) the implementation of the service was in less good category by 76,67%, c) the recommendation from the Guidance and Counseling teachers was in good category by 63,33%. The efforts that could be done by the Guidance and Counseling teachers to prepare the learners to choose further education were (a) providing a guidance for the Junior High School students, (b) providing information about further education completely, (c) designing a format of service about further education. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the efforts done by the Guidance and Counseling teachers to prepare the learners to choose further education need to be improved in the term of Guidance and Counseling service program and the implementation of the Guidance and Counseling service.
