Abstract

In teaching writing, teaching strategy and students’ autonomy influence students’ writing skill. This strategy used in this research was POW WWW W2 H2 Strategy in teaching writing. The purpose of this research is to find out the effect of POW WWW W2 H2 strategy and students’ autonomy toward their writing skill of stories. The design of the research was quasi experimental research with 2 x 2 factorial design. The population of this research was tenth grade students of SMAN I Pantai Cermin Kab. Solok. Story writing test and students’ autonomy questionnaire were used as research instruments. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by using t-test formula and two ways ANOVA. The result of the research showed that (1) the students who are taught by using POW WWW W2 H2 Strategy have better writing than taught by using small group discussion strategy; (2) the high autonomy students taught by using POW WWW W2 H2 Strategy have better writing skill than taught by using small group discussion; (3) the low autonomy students taught by using POW WWW W2 H2 Strategy do not have better writing skill than taught by using small group discussion strategy; (4) there is an interaction between both strategy and students’ autonomy on students writing skill on stories. Thus, POW WWW W2 H2 Strategy give significant effect on students’ writing skill than small group discussion especially for high autonomy students and it is recommended for the teachers to apply POW WWW W2 H2 Strategy to improve students’ writing skill
