Abstract
The problem that was faced by the students at grade V of State Elementary School 18 Anduring Padang was low in comprehending greeting. It was caused by some problems. One of the factors was difficulties of the students in speaking are shy and reluctant to speak in their class activities. This Research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research consisted of two cycles. Each cycle involved planning, action, observation, and reflection. The aims of this research are to explain whether Actional Functional Model (AFM) can improve students’ greeting mastery at grade V of state Elementary School 18 Anduring Padang and to explain the factors influence the changes students’ greeting mastery of functional model at grade V of State Elementary School 18 Anduring Padang. The data of this research were collected through the pre-test, evaluation at the end of every cycle, observations and interview. In this test, the students were asked to respond the expressions of greetings. They were listening and looking at, listening and doing and then saying and doing in every activities or meetings. Based on the research finding, it was found that Actional Functional Model could improve students’ greeting mastery at the first cycle and at the second cycle there were some factors influenced the improvements. Actional Functional Model could improve students’ greeting mastery. Furthermore, there are some suggestions to English teachers to apply this method. Because this method ease the students to comprehend the language use without memorization, translation, but using the language based on the context.
