Abstract

The background to this study is the difficulty faced by class five students with mild mental handicaps reading words containing the letters [a], [d], [g], [p], [b], [d], [n], [m], [w], [t], [r], and [u]. The reason for this was that the learning process was restricted to the text bookand the teacher rarely used other media. The object of this study was to increase the reading ability of class V students (B and I)who have mild mental handicaps at the special school Al-azhar Bukittinggi. Class action research was used in collaboration with the class teacher. The subjects of the study were the two children and the teacher of class V/C. This research was done in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of four meetings. The lesson began with an explanation from the teacher using a pop-up book, pointing out the letters and telling the difference between the letters. Based on the scores obtained by the students after this cycle it was evident that student B improved their score from before the cycle of 21,05% to 90% at the end. Student I’s score improved from 5,26% to 69%. Cycle II was two meetings learning to read words using a pop-up book. These lessons started with listening to instructions from the teacher, reading the syllablesof the word then reading the full word. After Cycle II student B reached a 100% score from an initial score of 16,7% and student I reached a score of 58% from an initial score 16,7%. The results of this study and analysis of the data show that using a popup book can improve the reading ability of theseclass five students with mild mental handicapspop-up book. It is suggested that teachers and researchers can use pop-up books to improve the reading skills students with mild mental handicaps
