Abstract

Even though several studies of translation shift analysis have widely been studied, the
application of the translation shift analysis approach in analysing online news is not
common. This study is aimed to analyse the translation shift in the Indonesian – English
translation of ANTARA News. This research focused on finding out the level shift,
category shift, and combination of translation shifts in the ANTARA News. This study
uses a descriptive qualitative methodology. The data in this research are five selected
news reports about COVID-19 in Indonesia, taken from the official website of Antara
News both in Indonesian and English versions. The news that are being studied in this
research using the theory of translation shift by Catford (1965) and the utterances are
the source of the data, as an Indonesian the source language and another as an English
the target language. After finishing the analysis, it was found out that all types of
translation shifts occur in the news, and combination shifts also show up in the news.
All types of translation shifts are level shift, and four types of category shifts: structure
shift, unit shift, class shift, intra-system shift. Combination shifts are the mix from those
translation shifts. In conclusion, it does not rule out the possibility that all types of
translation shifts can occur in non-fiction texts, such as news, in fact there are combinations of the shift in there
