Development of Meaningful Learning-Oriented Teaching Modules to Improve Understanding of Mathematical Concepts

Students’ low level of mathematical conceptual understanding remains a major challenge in modern mathematics education, as evidenced by baseline assessments failing to meet targeted criteria. This research aims to develop a meaningful-learning-oriented mathematics module assisted by digital flipbook media and evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing students' conceptual understanding. This study employed Research and Development (R&D) methodology using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). The research population comprised eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Kalianda, with samples selected from classes VIII A and VIII B. Data were collected using expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and pretest-posttest instruments administered to twenty participating students. Data analysis involved content and media validity evaluations alongside N-gain calculations. Results showed that expert evaluations rated the module in the “very suitable” category, while student response analysis yielded an attractiveness rating in the “very interesting” category. Furthermore, the N-gain test produced an average score of 0.49, falling into the “moderate” effectiveness category. In conclusion, the developed digital flipbook module is proven to be valid, attractive, and effective in improving students' mathematical conceptual understanding.
