Abstract

This research was intended to find out the quality and difficulties made by the eleventh-grade students at SMA N 2 Payakumbuh in translating an analytical exposition text from Indonesian to English. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research were 30 students from 2 classes of XI MIPA 4 and 5 of shift A, selected by using random sampling techniques. The technique of data collection were using translation test. The findings of the students’ translation quality was scored by using Waddington’s TQA model and the difficulties in translating was analyzed by using Baker, Ardi and Hartono’s theories. The result of the research showed that, students’ translation quality in translating the generic structures of an analytical exposition text were mostly in level 5 or successful. However, students’ translation quality in translating the language features were mostly in level 4 or almost completely successful. Meanwhile, the difficulties in translating faced by the students were mostly in the lexical meaning and the grammatical category. There were 23 incorrect translation in translating the lexical meaning and 18 incorrect translation for the grammatical category made by the students.
