Abstract
It is known that there are so many problems faced by this nation: corruption, disintegrated nation, inter-ethnic and inter-religion conflicts, brawls among villages, students, etc. The worse thing is the chaos in The House of Representatives in an assembly. All the facts above are the indication of failure of smart-character education in Indonesia. However, the declining of this nation character cannot be effectively solved through political process since character should be a foundation for the actualization of intelligence and knowledge devoted to nation and society interest. Character education as a part of moral development process is expected to be able to be the major foundation for the quality development of future human resources. The first former president of Indonesia, Soekarno, stated “This nation should be built by giving priority on character building because it will make us become a great, developed, prosperous, and dignified nation. If we do not do this, we will remain as a labor nation! In commemoration of National Education Day on May 2, 2010 entitled “Character Education to build National Civilization”, the president of Indonesia proclaimed and instructed the development of character education. One of the parameters for the success of smart character education is given to sport or physical education which is popular with its slogan „healthy life, competitive and fair plays (sportsmanship)‟ (BSNP, 2007). Physical education is one of important parts in shaping character of Indonesians who are physically and mentally strong.
