Abstract
This article describes whether the news and articles in local mass media in West Sumatera support gender equality or they encourage gender discrimination in society. This Study was done through content analysis strategy. 282 exemplars newspaper (Singgalang, Padang Express, Mimbar Minang, Serambi Pos, and Solid) published from April through June 2002 have been studied. The result showed that mostly news and articles can be categorized as neutral (no gender issues), and there are many representing gender-biased. Although there are few news and articles that support gender equality, it still represents the voice that protests the violence and subordination toward women. It means that local mass media agree with gender discrimination in terms of stereotype, marginalization, and double-role of women
