Abstract

This research studies students’ accuracy in translating positive politeness and negative politeness marker from the novel The Saint of Incipient Insanities. The purpose of the research is to find out the accuracy of students in translating the politeness marker in positive and negative strategies. The data of this research is done by the descriptive qualitative method. The research finding shows that there were 26 utterances of positive politeness and 16 utterances of negative politeness in 42 data. The result shows that from 28 students, 27 passed the accuracy in translating positive utterances and 29 passed in translating negative politeness utterances, 3 students produce less accurate positive politeness, and 1 student was found that the translation of negative politeness was less accurate.
