An Analysis of Swear Words Used by Netizens Comments In Lutfi Agizal’s Instagram Account.

Abstract
In society, people communicate and show emotion in different way. Currently, it often found that people express their feeling and emotion in swearing. This study aimed to find out the categories and functions of swear word used by netizens comments in Lutfi Agizal’s Instagram account. This research used a theory by Hughes’s (1996) for categories of swear word and Rothwell’s (1973) theory for functions of swear word. This study is descriptive research. The data were taken from twenty one posts in Lutfi Agizal’s account from August up to October 2020. The result showed that from 90 data collected, there were six categories out of swear word that have been found from Hughes’s theory there were religion, genitalia, excretion, stupidity, animal term and general. Meanwhile, there were five functions of swear word used in comments sections. They were to get attention, to discredit someone or something, to provoke, to provide catharsis, and to create interpersonal identification. Furthermore, the situation and posts influenced netizens to use swear word.
