Abstract

This research is mainly attempted to identify the types of oral classroom participation displayed by students at class, investigate factors that influence students' oral classroom participation in an English classroom and find out the students' perception towards oral classroom participation. A mixed method research design was employed where the data were taken from observation, questionnaire to 54 students, and the interview with the lecturer of General Speaking Class of Tadris English Department at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Imam Bonjol Padang to support the main data. The result of the study shows that spontaneous participation, required participation, and forced participation are mostly displayed during teaching and learning process in General Speaking Class. The second finding was found that the factors related to the role of faculty (93%), logistics (85%), grading (81 %) and personality traits (80%), give strong influences toward students' oral classroom participation. Specifically, interesting topic selection and supportive classmates impact the level of their participation. In addition, positive perception of the students on oral participation did matter impact on how they acted at classroom perceiving that oral classroom participation can improve students' ability to communicate well. Thus, it is expected that this research, can give contribution to English lecturers or other English instructors to promote students' activeness in participation during the learning and teaching process.
