Abstract

This research is purposely to find out the figurative language used by the comic in the performance. Figurative language utilizes words usually different from audiences' expectations. This research is descriptive research that consists of to dig out the types of figurative language and the meaning of each of them. The aim of this research is to help the audience of the performance to understand the material and get the message that the comic wants to convey. In this research, the researcher focus on the types and the function of figurative language that the researcher found in the transcription. The researcher used scanning technic to find out the data and classify based on the types of figurative language. The result is sarcasm was found as the majority with 53% appearance and the minority were metaphor, simile, metonymy, irony, allegory, personification, hyperbole. Then, there are five functions of figurative language found in the transcription such as ( 1) to hide the real meaning, (2) to show feeling, (3) to exaggerate the statement, (4) to compare two things, ( 5) give a name to a thing. This research also purposed to simplify the audiences of stand-up comedy to understand the purpose of the speaker.
