Abstract

The importance of critical thinking in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, urging education is able to prepare generations of critical thinkers to adapt to a challenging life in the future. The reality in Indonesia is found that students' mathematical critical thinking skills are still relatively low. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of mathematical critical thinking ability of students in class VIII of SMP Negeri 13 Padang in 2018/2019 Academic Year. The critical thinking indicators used according to Facione are interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Subject selection is done by purposive sampling. Data retrieval is done by observing, giving tests, and interviews. Based on the results of data analysis, it was concluded that the level of mathematical critical thinking ability of students in class VIII.1 of SMPN 13 Padang in the 2018/2019 academic year was moderate, amounting to 63.39%. This is due to the lack of understanding of students' concepts and the lack of training of students to think critically during learning and in exercises.
