Ide tari berangkat dari fenomena kehidupan nelayan yang berada di pesisir pantai. Orientasi garapan tari ini adalah modern, tipe tari dramatik, bentuk penyajian representative, dengan sumber garapan yang berpijak dari gerak-gerak maknawi. Karya tari “Deru” merupakan interpretasi terhadap semangat kehidupan nelayan dalam mempertahankan kelangsungan hidup. Gelombang besar dan badai yang mereka hadapi, merupakan tantangan yang tidak menghalangi semangat nelayan dalam melakukan aktivitas melaut.
