%X The application of Item Response Theory (IRT) is relatively new in Indonesian testing system, especially in TVET student competence testing. This paper present basic concept of IRT and then evaluate the accuracy of IRT ability estimation through the process of predicting TVET students mathematics competence (θ). Equating coefficients (k) is also calculated based on θ, before and after the process of smoothing. The stability of the two types of equating coeffients is compared by using F-test. Finally, it was revealed that there is no stability difference between equating coefficients of θ before and after smoothing. It can concluded that the application of IRT in testing students mathematics competence could produce accurate θ, and there is no need to be smoothed anymore.
