JLPT N4 Kanji Ability in 2021 Entry Year Students of
The Japanese Education Study Program, Universitas

Abstract
The research was motivated by the difficulties encountered by students
when learning Kanji which has two ways of reading Kanji; similar shapes and
multiple strokes. This research aims to examine the JLPT N4 Kanji ability of
students admitted in the 2021 academic year of the Japanese Education study
program at Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is descriptive quantitative
methods. The research focuses on a population of 57 students entering the
program; with a sample size of 25 students was selected trough random sampling.
The data analysis included results from the JLPT N4 Kanji ability test
encompassing on kei gi elements. Based on the research, it reveals that the JLPT
N4 Kanji ability of students is in the “Good” classification with an average score
of 71.87. In the on element, indicator I, classified as “With Phrase” with an
average of 88.4. Indicator II’s kei element has been classified as “Very Good”
with an average score of 76. Meanwhile, indicator III’s gi element has been
classified as “less than Adequate” with an average score of 51.2.
