Abstract

This analysis delves into the power relation between Madeline Whittier and her mother, Pauline, in Nicola Yoon's 2015 novel Everything, Everything. The narrative is shaped by Madeline's relationship with her mother, who holds significant power due to her severe medical condition. Pauline's role is both mother and doctor of her daughter (Madeline), ensuring Madeline's well-being but also restricting her freedom and social interactions. The analysis examines Pauline's protective nature, which reflects maternal love and fear, and how Madeline, despite her physical limitations, gradually asserts her agency and challenges her mother's authority, leading to a power shift within their relationship. The research explores the power relation between Madeline and Pauline in the novel Everything, Everything, focusing on their evolving relationship and the challenges they face in a complex mother-daughter setting. It highlights the diverse ways power can be asserted, challenged, and redefined in extraordinary circumstances.
