Abstract

A teacher's knowledge is essential in deciding what material will be given to students and how he develops the material according to the needs of his students. For this reason, teachers must have content knowledge, which is knowledge of the materials and material development. The purpose of this study was to find out about the content knowledge of high school English teachers of News item text material in West Pasaman Regency. In collecting data, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive design. Eight teachers from different schools were selected as participants in this study by purposive sampling. They are teachers from SMA N 1 Gunung Tuleh, SMA N 1 Kinali, SMA N 1 Koto Balingka, SMA N 1 Lembah Melintang, SMA N 1 Pasaman, SMA N 1 Ranah Batahan, SMA N 1 Talamau, and SMA N 2 Pasaman. In collecting data, researchers used two instruments, Tests and document analysis. The results of this study showed that the teachers have knew the material well. That is based on the fact that the teachers can answer questions in the Test about one of the English teaching materials. However, in including material in the lesson plans, none of the teachers did material development or adaptation. So many materials and exercises were still in copies from the internet. Therefore, teacher content knowledge still has to be improved so that teachers can create or develop materials based on the needs of their students.
