Abstract

Mood is the form of the verb that shows the mode or manner in which a thought is expressed and it also takes to show how it is to be regarded, such as a fact, a command, a wish, or an uncertainty. The objective of this research is to find out the students‘ ability in identifying differences between indicative mood an subjunctive mood in a sentence. The population of the sample is the students of English language and literature department academic year of 2019. The sample of the reseach was 30 students by using cluster random sampling. The instrument of the research were test consist of 35 questions which was done in 90 minutes. The ability of the students was cathegorized into excellent, good, fair, poor and very poor. The ability of students‘ in identifying differences between indicative mood an subjunctive mood in a sentence is good. The result shows that the total score was 2151 and the mean score was 72 which was cathegorized as good. To determine the problems the research made a description by the student incorrect answer. The student‘s problems in identifying differences between indicative mood and subjunctive mood found such as: the students were wrong identifying fact in the from of statements and question in simple sentence and past tense at indicative mood, the students were wrong in identifying subjunctive mood by using the subjunctive mood verb (demand, suggest, propose, doubt, wish, advise, recommend, ask, insist, urge, prefer,request, pray, essential, necessary, better), and the students were wrong in analyzing the used of If clause; simple tense if clause, past tense if clause, and past perfect tense if clause.
