Abstract

The edible film is a plastic that is easily degraded by microbes in the soil due to the presence of starch. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the addition of PEG-based carrageenan as well as to determine the physical, mechanical, and biodegradable properties and to compare it with the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) ZI707. The study was conducted using 4% PEG and variations in the addition of carrageenan concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 1 %, 1.5%, and 2%. The results of the physical properties test are the higher the concentration of addition of carrageenan, the higher the thickness value. For testing the mechanical properties, the optimum results were obtained with the addition of 1.5% carrageenan concentration with a tensile strength value of 1.407 MPa and an elongation of 0.582%, and elasticity of 403 MPa, and the biodegradation value will decrease along with the addition of carrageenan concentration. The FTIR results show that there are no new functional groups from the test results and the results of the characteristic degree of crystallinity on biodegradable plastics obtained that the degree of crystallinity of edible films without the addition of carrageenan is 72.71% and edible films with additions of 68.60%.
