Abstract

This thesis is the result of research that describes several characters who feel lonely in a collection of short stories written by writers who come from Indonesia but make short story texts in English. Loneliness is a feeling that arises when they have no place to talk, lack of communication with their environment. Loneliness can be felt consciously or unconsciously. The purpose of this study is to find out how each character in this collection of stories dealing with feelings of loneliness, knows how humans control feelings of loneliness, and what self-defense characters do to deals with feelings of loneliness. The method in this study uses a descriptive method. This descriptive method is used to analyze the object of research by using data from a collection of short stories that have been qualified into the same common thread, namely loneliness. The results showed that the feeling of loneliness of each character that emerged from the family factor. Family factors involved in character feelings, feelings of loneliness felt by characters due to lack of communication between family members in each character. Furthermore, the results of the study show that the human psyche controls the feeling of loneliness, the human psyche is divided into three, namely the id, ego and superego. Furthermore, how to overcome feelings of loneliness with self-defense, self-defense is also carried out consciously and unconsciously and there are no several classifications regarding self-defense such as; transfer, reaction formation and so on.
