Abstract

There are ways that humans use to express their feelings, such as apologies, requests, complaints, and compliments. Males and females have different communicatio characteristics. Because of the differences in communication characteristics, there are also differences in how they express compliments. Language and culture cannot be separated. As an element of language, the compliment is impossible to separate from culture. Compliments are strongly influenced by their cultural background. The research focuses on analyzing how male and female judges deliver compliments on Asia’s and America’s Got Talent 2019 talent shows. The research involves the topic of compliments used theory by Rees-Miller (2011), compliment strategies used theory by Yuan (2002), the function of compliments used theory by Wu (2008), and syntactic pattern of compliments used theory by Wolfson (1984). This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data were the compliments uttered by the judges in their comments to all the finalists. There were 147 compliments collected from Asia’s and America’s Got Talent 2019. The findings show that there are differences between male and female judges in compliments behavior such as topic, strategies, function, and syntactic pattern both in Asia’s and America’s Got Talent 2019. On the topic of compliments, both male and female judges in Asia’s and America’s Got Talent 2019 tend to use the topic of performance/skill. In compliment strategies, there are two dominant compliment strategies found in Asia’s and America’s Got Talent 2019, they are Explicit and Implicit. In the function of compliments, the compliments were just divided into two functions, which were to express admiration or approval of someone’ work/appearance/taste and to replace gratitude/ greetings /congratulations/ apologies. In the syntactic pattern of compliments, there are three dominant syntactic patterns found in Asia’s and America’s Got Talent 2019, they are I (really) {like/love} NP, PRO is (really) (a) ADJ NP, and PRO is/are/was/were (really) ADJ. It can be concluded that both male and female judges tend to use impersonal compliments rather than personal compliments.
