Abstract

This study is aimed at providing explanation on the students‟ difficulties in writing descriptive text and the strategies applied by the teacher at the tenth grade of SMA N 10 Padang. The students‟ errors were viewed from their errors in writing the generic structures and language features of descriptive text and what the strategies were applied to overcome the errors. This study is qualitative research. The sample of the research were the students at X MIPA 1 of SMA N 10 Padang and an English teacher who taught descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMAN 10 Padang. The data were obtained from document analysis, interview and observation checklist. The findings of the study reveal that the errors arose from the compositions of generic structure and 14 types of errors in language features. Thus, the strategies applied by the teacher were observing, guiding question, sentence construction, giving opportunity to ask, metalinguistic feedback and giving the criteria. Among those strategies, guiding question was the most frequently used strategies in overcoming the difficulties in descriptive text. The strategy was effective to give the students deep understandings about descriptive text
