Abstract

This thesis reveals the defense mechanisms used in an adolescent's adoption in the novel Far From the Tree (2017) by Robin Benway. The main focus of this thesis is a defense mechanism used by adolescents after adoption to overcome the problems that they experience related to their status as children of adoption. This thesis uses the theory of psychoanalysis to analyze the defense mechanisms used by adolescents following adoption and uses the theory of Phebe Cramer (2008) and Minderop to analyze the forms of defense mechanisms used by adolescents following adoption. After analyzing the defense mechanisms of the figures in the novel Far From the Tree (2017) by Robin Benway, the author found out , the seven defense mechanisms contained in the theory of Cramer (2008) are only some of the defense mechanisms used by the character: Projection, Denial, Repression, Rationalization, and Displacement.Cramer analyzes three defense mechanisms (Denial, Projection, Formation) used by teenagers aged up to 18 years to protect themselves from the problems they experience. Then to complete the analysis of this defense mechanism, the researcher added the concept of defense mechanism from Minderop as a concept to analyze this literary work. The closest people and lives that move the figures are experiencing problems such as loneliness, loss of identity, and difficulty trusting new people. So, the figures form a defense mechanism to protect themselves from these problems. Keywords: Defense mechanism, Adoption, teenager.
