Abstract

Translating cultural terms into English is still an issue for students, especially non-English speaking country students. This research is aimed to investigate students' ability, techniques, and problems in translating cultural terms from Indonesian into English. The type of the research is descriptive research where the data of students' ability, techniques, and problems are described briefly. The samples of this research are 12 forth-grades students of English Department at Ekasakti University Padang located in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Gathering the data is done through translation test and interview. The result shows that the students' ability to produce accurate and acceptable translation in translating cultural terms from Indonesian into English is on the good level with some weaknesses in minimum level are still found in the translations made by the students such as, addition, omission, and appropriate words. In relation to techniques, 11 techniques are used by students where literal translation technique is considered as the most prominent one with 162 cases found. The two major problems found in this research are lexical problem and students' lack of knowledge about translation techniques. The problems are considered affecting the quality of translation made by the students. Some improvements are needed in teaching and learning translation, especially related to cultural terms and translation techniques.
