Abstract

This research studies about the types of onomatopoeia in the three selected series of Diary of a Wimpy Kid novel and the source of sound of onomatopoeia used in these novels. The purpose of this research is to find out the types and source of sound of onomatopoeia used by the author in selected series of Diary of a Wimpy Kid novel. The data were analyzed by using theory of Ullmann (1962). The data were all of onomatopoeia used in these three novels and the source of data in this research was the Diary of a Wimpy Kid novels.The research findings show that there were 2 types of onomatopoeia in 231 data. Based on the frequencies of types of onomatopoeia, Primary Onomatopoeia is the most dominant type of onomatopoeia used in the novels with 120 uses (51.94%). In addition, the secondary onomatopoeia is the least used in the novel with 111 data (48.06%). In addition, there are four types of source of sound of onomatopoeia; calls of animals with 12 uses (5.20%), sounds made by human with 107 uses (46.32%), sounds of nature with 2 uses (0.87%), and sounds of inanimate object with 110 uses (47.61%). Sounds of inanimate object is the most dominant type of onomatopoeia used in the novels with 110 data (47.61%). In addition, sounds of nature is the least type used in the novel with 2 data (0.87%).
