Abstract
This study aims to compare the differences and the similarities between Indonesia and English pop song lyrics in 1) the level of ideational metafunction, 2) the level of interpersonal metafunction, and 3) the level of a textual metafunction. The systemic functional linguistics theory by Halliday was applied to analyze this research. The method used in this research was a descriptive research method. The study results show that they share six similarities and three differences in the level of an ideational metafunction. Then, there are three similarities and two differences at the interpersonal level. Meanwhile, there are four similarities and two differences found for textual metafunction. The conclusion obtained from the findings is that they are more similar rather than different, and similarities in how they produce the song lyric are affected by the selection of words in the three levels of metafunction, although differences in cultural background, nevertheless, from the song, which is represented through song lyrics, the similarity ways of producing structure of clauses
