Abstract

This research aims to find out the ability in producing an acceptable Indonesian translation of comic strips made by English Language Education students of Universitas Negeri Padang and find out the problems faced by students in translating English comic strips that affect to the quality of their translation. This research was conducted by using descriptive research and using translation test as an instrument in collecting the data. The population of this research was all of the third-year English Language Education students in UNP in the 2020/2021 academic year who have taken English-Indonesia Translation course that divided into Translation A and Translation B. The sample was students in translation B that consist of 36 students. The sample in this research was chosen by using the cluster random sampling technique. To gain the trustworthiness of the instrument of the research was validated and the translation ability was scored by involving three raters. The finding of this research showed that from 36 students, 17 (47.2%) of them have an excellent level of ability to produce an acceptable translation, 18 (50%) students have a good level, and 1 student (2.8%) has fairly good level of ability. In general, the students' ability in producing acceptable Indonesian translation of comic strips is categorized as good level (79.9%). Furthermore, the result of this research also showed that there are 3 problems faced by students in translating comic strip namely cultural problem, linguistic problem, and technical problem, in which cultural and linguistic problem is the dominant problem faced by students in translating comic strip.
