Abstract

The development of engineering materials has increased its use in various fields. Engineering material which is a combination of various materials that can be made into a product particle board. Areca catechu is a plant that has fiber and seeds. However, seed wrap fibers only become wasted and not utilized so that this potential will be used as engineering material. The development of various technological processes in the utilization of fiber waste into particles as engineering materials in the form of particle boards is very possible. The development of particle boards made from areca fiber as interior furniture materials which have the ability and light weight as a substitute for wood furniture. In making this particle board, areca fiber is made into particles and combined with a binder. The combined statement is given with a certain pressure which is then dried. Optimization of the concentration of a mixture of particles and adhesives in an effort to obtain the characteristics of new engineered materials that can be developed. The results of particle board testing made from raw areca fiber with tapioca adhesive obtained an average density value of 0.71 gr/cm3 at 60% concentration variation of areca fiber particles. The Modulus of Elasticity (MoE) value of the particle board was obtained at 4761.68 kg/cm2 . From the analysis of the characteristics of the areca fiber particle board, it meets the quality standards of JIS A 5908-2003 and SNI 03-2105-2006. So that the areca fiber reinforced particle board can be recommended as a raw material for making interior furniture which is not directly exposed to water and is in a dry place instead of wood
