Abstract

The existence of energy sources that are needed in human life has diminished, especially fuel oil. This is because the level of usage in Indonesia has exceeded domestic production. The acceleration of choice and adoption of alternative energy is a step and effort to overcome this condition through the development of a product diversification program in the form of areca-based fiber briquettes. Areca fiber is a natural fiber derived from areca catechu after being peeled for the collection of betel nuts. Areca fiber has the potential to be used as a raw material for briquettes, which so far has only been a community waste. Areca fiber waste is a potential source of biomass energy that can be processed and used as briquette fuel. The experimental method was carried out by making briquettes mixed with areca nut fiber and tapioca adhesive on the variation ratio of areca nut fiber by 90%, 80%, 70%, and 60%. From this study, the results obtained consisted of the characteristics of the quality of areca fiber briquettes with variations in the concentration of 80% of areca fiber and 20% tapioca adhesive having the highest heating value of 12352.9 kJ/kg and the type of fiber of 318.71 kg/m3. Success in the process and produce briquettes in correctional facilities can reduce dependence on fuel oil. Areca fiber briquette development as an effort to obtain alternative energy that has the performance and quality of product suppliers. The implementation of the utilization of fiber waste can be done in the community to achieve energy security through the process of applying technology.
