Abstract

This study conducted on students majoring in mechanical engineering diploma III, lecturer and industry with the aim of: (1) find the initial data from the competence of graduates, (2) industry expectations for the competence of graduates, (3) finding appropriate learning models to improve the competence of graduates, (4) determines the gap of competence on the current conditions and competency expectations of the graduates, and they will be given a solution through the development of project-based learning model. This research uses research and development, population of research are lecturers and students majoring in Mechanical Engineering Diploma Padang State University, and Polytechnic Padang, some industries that require graduates, the result is to formulate the competence of graduates desired by the industry. The results showed that the level of student achievement of competence in mechanical engineering is based on the current state of opinion of the lecturer is 3.38 or category enough, in the opinion of the students is 3.66 or category enough. Teaching and Learning student current conditions based on the opinion of lecturers is 3.64 or in enough categories, while in the opinion of the students is 3.64 or category enough. The achievement level of competence of graduates in the opinion of the current situation of the industry is low. It is evident from interviews and observations in some industries. Several engineering manager, believes that vocational education graduates are not ready to use, the competence of graduates is still very low, not relevant to industry needs. In addition, advances technological in the industrial sector are not balanced with learning and practice that conducted in vocational educational institutions, this makes graduates more distant than industry expectations.
