Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the speech style used by Ellen Degeneres in Ellen Talk Show with the title "Ellen Meets a 5-Year-Old Geography Expert". The objectives of the study are : (1) To identify the speech styles used by the host and the guest in Ellen Degeneres Talk Show. (2) To identify the dominant speech styles used by the host and the guest on Ellen Degeneres Talk Show. In collecting the data, the researcher watched and re-watched the Talk Show. Then, the researcher wrote down the data. After the data being collected, the writer categorized and analyzed the data based on each category of speech style. The result of the research shows there are four of five speech style uses by Ellen and Nate. The data acquisition comes from Joos theory. Based on Joos theory. There are five of speech styles. Those are Frozen style, formal style, consultative style,casual and intimate style. In a result, the researcher found the speech styles that used, they are casual style that only occurs 11 times or 68%, consultative style that occurs 2 times or 13%, formal style that occurs 2 times or 13%, and intimate style that occurs once or 6%. The mostly used by Ellen and Nate occurs 11 times or 68%. Finally, the writer suggests the next researchers to explore more theories and the newest theory of speech styles.
