Abstract

Smartphone addiction has recently become a phenomenon that is easy to find, the thing that causes addiction is based on the desire of individuals to obtain self-acceptance of social development. The purpose of this study is; (1) Describe the smartphone addiction level for guidance and counseling students in the year of 2015, (2) describe the conditions of social interest in guidance and counseling students in 2015. This research is a descriptive type research with quantitative methods. The population of the study were Guidance and Counseling students of the Faculty of Education, State University of Padang, in the year of 2015, there were 120 students, with a sample of 84 students. Sampling using purposive random sampling technique. The results of the study revealed that in general students experienced a condition of smartphone addiction in the moderately opium category with the condition of student social interest at the medium category level. Based on research findings, it is advisable for Counselors to be able to provide guidance at the prevention stage for students not to experience smartphone addiction and Counselors can work together with peers to handle students who are addicted to smartphones
