Abstract

Understanding of mathematicaloconcepts isoone of theolearning objectivesothat are expected to be achieved by students during the process of learning mathematics. But in reality the understanding of the mathematical concepts of class IX students of SMP 8 Pariaman is still low. One of the factors that causes it is the role of students who are still passive in developing and discovering mathematical concepts and learning processes that are still oriented to teachers. Efforts can beomadeoto improve the understanding of students' mathematicaloconcepts, one of which is to implement discovery learning models. The discovery learning model can change the learning conditions that are passively active and creative, and change teacher-oriented learning to be oriented to students. This study aims to describe whether the discovery learning model can improve the understanding of the concept of class IX students of SMP 8 Pariaman.The type of research used is pre-experiment with a one group pre-test post-test design research design. The population in this study was class IX of SMP 8 Pariaman with a sample class IX 1. The research instrument used was a test of understanding mathematical concepts in the form of essay questions. Based on the analysis, it canobe seen thatothe significant level of 0.05 by paired sample t-test concludedothat the understandingoof mathematicaloconcepts the learners after applying the model of discovery learning increased rather than understanding of mathematical concepts before implementing a discovery model of learning in class IX SMPN 8 Pariaman. This means that the discovery learning model provides a positive influence on understanding the mathematical concepts of students. In addition, the discovery learning model can increase the activeness and independence of students shown when working on the worksheet of students at each meeting.
