Abstract
The results of preliminary observations show the situation and condition of mathematics learning in the research object, that is some Junior High School in Sungai Limau . The author found learning devices used in the schools such as lesson plans and worksheet not optimal to improving mathematical problem solving ability at grade VII students of junior high school. That is the reason why learning devices need to developed to improve mathematical problem solving ability of students. Either the efforts for solve the problem is used learning based on contextual. In this research, learning devices based on contextual developed. The goal is produce a learning devices based on contextual that valid, practical and effective. Research and development using Ploomp and Nieveen models (2013), which consists of three phase are the preliminary research, prototype phase and assessment phase. In the preliminary phase, need analysis, curriculum analysis, student characteristics analysis, and concept analysis were conducted. In prototype phase, research was designed lesson plans (RPP) and students handout based on contextual. In the assessment phase, assessments of practical and effective based on the results of the teacher response of questionnaire, student responses of questionnaire, observation sheets of RPP implementation, observation sheets of students activity, and the final test result mathematical problem solving ability.
