Abstract

Mathematical communication ability is the purpose of learning mathematics in school. However, that goal has not been achieved with the maximum. One method that can be used is a method of inquiry. In this method the presentation of the subject matter to gain knowledge conducted by investigating itself. Students have ample opportunity to seek and discover for themselves what they need. The purpose of this study is to reveal the mathematical comparison between students' communication skills by learning to apply the conventional method of inquiry and learning as a whole and based on prior knowledge of high and low. This research is a Quasi Exprimental Design using two classes, namely class experimental and control classes. The population in this study were students of class XI MAN Salido Pesisir Selatan. Selection of the sample by random sampling. The result showed that the students' mathematical communication skills, both overall and based on prior knowledge, the use of inquiry learning gained higher than mathematical communication skills of students using conventional learning.
