Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is investigated the concrete behavior with variant used of recycled coarse aggregate instead of coarse aggregate. Recycled coarse aggregate is an aggregate from concrete waste fractions that are not used anymore. Effort to utilize waste concrete not only reduces the environmental problems but can provide economic value to the construction, as well as an effort to conserve natural resources. Waste originating from the ruins of this building to be used in this study as an alternative aggregates, which can replace some or all of the natural aggregates in concrete mixtures. Concrete compressive strength is 22.5 MPa plan. The results of laboratory tests showed that the strength and stiffness of the test object to the natural aggregate concrete with higher strength and stiffness than concrete recycled coarse aggregate. But concrete with coarse recycled aggregate 20% have a higher compressive strength than concrete with recycled coarse aggregate of 10%. After that the strength and stiffness of the specimen decreases proportional to the addition of recycled aggregate content. This is because the absorption of recycled coarse aggregate is greater than natural aggregate. This means that recycled aggregate to absorb water is greater than the natural aggregate. This will cause a decrease in the strength of the concrete. The same behavior is shown in split testing. The pattern of cracking in concrete recycled aggregate showed crack surface conditions there are many empty cavity. This is because the content of recycled aggregate concrete on affecting the bond between the matrix and the particles making up the aggregate itself. Cement content that has been attached to the recycled aggregates, both coarse and fine matrix which weakens the bond will decrease the strength of concrete. But in general, the use of recycled coarse aggregate up to 30% of the weight percentage of coarse aggregate nature still planned to meet the compressive strength (22.5 MPa).
