Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the training methods of circuit playing in innovative training, with theoretical concepts and empowering the local cultural environments as well as the potential of martial arts training units of Tarung Derajat to enhance basic technique skills, and the athletes’ excellent character. The implementation of this study is using experimental design method which is The Pretest-Postest Controlled Group Design. Samples were collected by using Stratified-cluster random sampling. For the experimental group is using Bukittinggi Training unit and the control group using Padang training unit, each group contains 30 athletes. The instruments consist of basic technique skill tests and mastery of excellent character of Tarung Derajat martial. The data are analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (Anava) technique. The results of the study show that (1) The improvement of basic technique skills of Tarung Derajat athletes as a whole is better when using the circuit playing method, as well as in the group of high-excellent characters, while in the low-excellent character group both methods (circuit playing and circuit training method) provide the improvement, (2) the implementation of circuit training method and excellent characters give an effect towards the improvement of athletes’ basic technique skills, (3) There is a significant difference between the two methods, the circuit playing method is more effective for high- and lowexcellent characters, (4) while the circuit training method can only be used for lowexcellent characters.
